Online Business Listings: What Are They and Why Do You Need Them?

Online business listings are collections of business information that are organized on websites known as directories – think of them as the digital version of phonebooks, but with a lot more bells and whistles. You’ve probably heard of some of the popular directories, such as Google, Bing, Yahoo!, Yelp and Citysearch. There are dozens of these directories that require you to register and fill in the many categories of information about your business before potential customers can start to see your business show up in their search results.

Why Does Your Business NEED Online Business Listings?

Your goal is to be visible and then appeal and communicate with your customer – online business listings give you that opportunity. Listings include business information, contact information and maps as well as engaging imagery to convert online searchers into customers. By including your messaging, logo, and other key business attributes in your online business listings, you build brand awareness and online visibility.

Since online business listings are housed on popular websites such as Google Places for Business or Yelp, they show up in search engine results for your business. Many of these websites are reputable to Google and other search engines, enabling them to show up in the top results. Your goal for search engine optimization (SEO) should be to have your website show up in results for both direct searches for your business’s name and searches for your business’s products and services (with or without your business name).

By setting up your online business listings, you increase the number of times your business is linked to and mentioned on websites other than your own – proving to Google that your business and your website are legitimate. When Google knows that your business is trustworthy, you will also have better SEO for your own website, increasing the chances that customers can find you online.

Not only is it important for you to have complete information about your business on your online business listing, but it’s also very important to have correct, consistent information across all your listings. You may even have incorrect or incomplete business listings you don’t even know about. These incorrect listings can confuse or misinform people who are searching for your business information. Inconsistencies could even get your listing flagged as spam.

    What’s Next?

It can be difficult or time consuming to set up all your online business listings. It’s important to keep track of all those log-ins and passwords, keep tabs on when various listings go live, ensure they are up-to-date and ensure changes on one listing are also changed on all the others as well.

At Keystone Resources, we manage this task for our clients ensuring their business’s information is correct and consistent across 70+ of the most commonly used directories. We also manage listings for them, making sure all listings stay up-to-date. We’ll even provide quarterly reports with an overview of the traffic so adjustments can be made as needed.
